Play and spontaneity promote growth, learning, and creativity—when we play, we thrive. But, play only occurs when the risk is fun. We can’t play when we are in a situation of danger, anxiety, or contraction.
To that end, AIN is committed to creating a learning space in which participant safety and play are not hindered by discrimination or harassment. We acknowledge that bias and harassment incidents often fall outside the boundary of formal policies and laws, especially for an international community that draws from a multitude of contexts and precedents. Nonetheless, we believe we are called as a collective and as individual members to uphold our shared values and principles to provide a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age or religion.
We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. We expect participants to follow these rules at all event venues and event-related social activities, as well as outside of event activities during the conference.
Harassment reduces the value of our conference for everyone. Harassment includes, but is not limited:
- Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination
- Comments that are lewd, lascivious, demeaning or derogatory
- Unwelcome discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity
- Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
- Harassing photography or recording
- Sustained disruption of talks or other events
- Inappropriate physical contact
- Unwelcome sexual attention, including any specific activity for which affirmative consent was not requested and given
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior
Alcohol consumption or use of other intoxicating substances is neither an excuse nor an invitation for harassment.
Reporting:
If someone makes you or anyone else feel unsafe or unwelcome, you are not required to but you are encouraged to report potential incidents. You can make a report either personally or anonymously. Conference staff and AIN Board Members will take seriously all concerns brought to them.
You can make an anonymous report here.
When taking a personal report, the conference team and AIN Board will work to meet with you promptly, ensure you are safe, and treat your concern with respect and sensitivity. They may involve other conference team or board members to ensure your report is managed properly.
Once safe, we’ll ask you to tell us about what happened. This can be upsetting, but we’ll handle it as respectfully as possible—and you can bring someone to support you. You won’t be asked to confront anyone and we won’t tell anyone who you are.
The conference team will be available to help you contact hotel/venue security, local law enforcement, local support services, provide escorts or otherwise assist you to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance.
Enforcement:
We expect all participants to follow these rules at all event venues and event-related activities. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, conference organizers and/or the AIN Board retain the right to take any actions to keep the event a welcoming environment for all participants. This may include anything from warning the offender, expulsion from the conference (with no refund), or suspending them from participation in future events.
Ultimately, we want participants to feel safe to play together… and feel happy at any AIN conference or event. That is our shared commitment together.
